August 30: Ancilla Takes Fourth at Delta College Invite
The Ancilla College men’s soccer team finished fourth at the Delta College Invitational this past weekend after a pair of losses to Region 12 rivals Lakeland Community College and Owens Community College.

The Chargers (0-2-0, 0-2-0 Region 12) fell 3-2 to Lakeland on Saturday in their season opener, followed by a 2-0 loss to Owens on Sunday.

Against Lakeland, Ancilla struggled in their possession, but still managed to take the lead 40 minutes in.  Sophomore midfielder Michael Lobbo did well to collect an early cross from wingback Augusto Tirabassi and calmly finished past Lakeland keeper Antons Trifonovs for a 1-0 lead.

After surrendering goals in the 51st and 62nd minutes, Ancilla pulled even on a Cody Koesters goal in the 70th minute, with the assist credited to Anthony Huard.

Lakeland sealed the game on a 78th minute penalty kick by Samuel Mutemwa.

On Sunday, two early mistakes proved costly for the Chargers, as Rodcliff Hall and Glenroy Miller both scored within the first 13 minutes for Owens in a 2-0 victory.

Ancilla did well to rebound from the early goals and put plenty of pressure on the Owens net, but struggled to finish their chances.  Chargers keeper Alex Howe collected three saves in the loss.

Chargers freshman midfielder Horraine Lewis was named to the Delta College Invitational All-Tournament team for his efforts.

“We’re not in panic mode by any stretch,” said Ancilla coach James Drzewiecki.  “We played very well against two quality opponents, and we just didn’t execute at key moments.  These types of matches are good for us, especially our younger players, because they teach us how important attention to detail is.  I have little doubt that our best soccer is ahead of us and I think as this team continues to jell, we’re going start seeing some very good results out of our matches.”

August 20: Ancilla Men’s Soccer Announces 2010 Roster
Ancilla College men's soccer coach James Drzewiecki has announced the 25-man roster that will represent the NJCAA Division 1 program during the 2010-2011 academic year.

Eight sophomores and 17 freshmen comprise not only the largest roster in program history, but arguably the deepest and most talented to date.

“Every year, we keep trying to push the envelope and keep moving forward,” said Drzewiecki, who enters his fourth year at the helm with an overall record of 24-22-3, including a 14-12-0 mark in conference play.  “Last year, we got our first taste of the region tournament and we saw what it takes to succeed at that level.  This year, our goal is to win it.”

To accomplish that, Drzewiecki has pieced together his most decorated roster yet – as well as his most geographically diverse.

There are 13 Indiana natives on the roster – including six from within the College’s 40-mile radius – while ten others make their homes in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Nevada.  Two international players – Augusto Tirabassi (Boituva, Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Jamaican U20 National Team pool member Horraine Lewis (Hopewell, Hanover, Jamaica) – are also on the roster.

Eight players were named to their respective all-state teams while in high school.  Two others were selected to represent their state in all-star matches during their senior years.

Drzewiecki is optimistic that this group can build on the team’s successful 2009 campaign and finish atop a very difficult Region 12 conference.

“From a talent perspective, yes, I feel we have the potential to pull it off,” said Drzewiecki.  “All the same, the teams in this region have improved so much since I first arrived and we are going to have to outplay some of the best junior college programs in the nation if we want to win the region title.  It’s up to our guys how hard they want to work and how selfless they want to be if we’re going to achieve our goal.  I’m just as excited as anyone to see how it plays out.”

Sophomore midfielder Trevor Ballinger (Warsaw, IN) will serve as the team captain for 2009.  Cody Koesters (Dayton, OH) and Adam Calhoun (Argos, IN) will serve as assistant captains.

Assistant coach Cameron Markiewicz returns for his second season with the Chargers and will handle goalkeeper training duties.  Kim Richie will begin her fourth season as the team’s athletic trainer.

The Chargers will open the season on August 28 when they travel to University Center, MI, to play Region 12 rivals Lakeland Community College and Owens Community College at the Delta College Soccer Invitational.

They will return to Donaldson for their home opener on September 4 when they host Delta College.  Kickoff for that match is at 1:00 p.m. Eastern.
