Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ
Founded in the mid 1800s by a German woman who sought to assist the poor and needy in her small village, the congregation today numbers nearly seven hundred women and continues the work of the foundress Katherine Kasper. Ministries of the Sisters include education, health care, social work, caring for infants and children, missionary endeavors, and assistance in parishes and retreat centers. Two Sisters minister at Ancilla College today as educators. Sr. Carleen Wrasman is chair of the Education Division and serves as Director of Mission Integration. Sr. Judith Diltz is an instructor of writing and humanities courses. Several Sisters also serve the college on the Board of Trustees. These include Sisters Nora Hahn, Marlene Ann Lama, Jolise May, Mary Jo Shingler, Cathy Schwemer, Agatha Niebrugge and Kathleen R Quinn. Ancilla College is located on the same grounds in Donaldson, Indiana, as the American headquarters of the Sisters. The thousand-acre campus, called the PHJC Ministry Center, includes a retreat and conference center, Lindenwood; a ministry directed toward the needs of the environment called Earthworks; Maria Center Apartments for retired senior citizens; the Catherine Kasper Home, a nursing home for the elderly; and Ancilla Farms, a beef and grain farm. In addition to the Sister members of the Poor Handmaids, the religious congregation also has an active group of lay members called Associates. A lay community following the footsteps of Blessed Catherine Kasper which calls itself Fiat Spiritus has also recently formed. Fiat Spiritus has its center on the campus also.
