Ancilla Softball Prepared for Season Opener

DONALDSON, IN – With mounds of snow still covering the grounds of the Charger Complex, the Ancilla softball team prepares for their annual trip south to begin their spring season.
The Chargers open up their season at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, Florida on Saturday, March 8. While in Florida Ancilla will play eight games before returning home for more non-conference games on March 18 & 20, weather permitting. Their Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) Western Conference season is scheduled to begin at home on March 21 against Jackson College.

Ancilla returns six sophomores to a squad that finished 19-25 last season, including their only five pitchers on the staff this season. “Our pitching staff returns with experience,” said Ancilla coach Scott Reese. “I have high expectations for them. A lot of our season will ride on their health and success.”

All-Conference returner Marissa Sullivan will be looked upon to lead the Charger offense after a stellar .341 batting average and a .507 slugging percentage last season. Sullivan will see action at shortstop, first base, and in the circle, where she compiled a 6-4 record, including two shutouts last season. Other returners for Ancilla include third baseman Courtney Henning (.327 BA/.429 SLG), pitcher Brianna McClellan (5-6, 3.42 ERA), pitcher Stephanie Lamm (3.93 ERA), third baseman/outfielder Hanna Moore, and pitcher Joelyn Flotow.

New faces on the Charger roster include players who will be looked upon to shine in multiple positions. Catcher and shortstop Kirsten Irvine (Seeger) and C/1B Madyson Price (Logansport), along with C/SS/OF Dakota Riddle (Franklin Community) will be expected to anchor the middle of the lineup for the young Ancilla team.

Other Charger freshman hoping to make their mark include second baseman Morgan Peoni (Franklin Community), third baseman Mariah Miller (Anderson), C/OF Ali Cobb (Washington Township), utility players Ali Charters (Lowell), Ashton Humphrey (Pendleton Heights), Kayla Smith (River Forest), and outfielder Taylor Upshaw (Southport).
